Operation of Continuous Blowdown Heat Recovery System in Alberta

To keep acceptable levels of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the boiler, many high-pressure steam boilers require constant surface blowdown. Continuous surface Boiler Blowdown in Alberta may be a considerable loss of energy, making the investment in a heat recovery system easier to justify. Three substantial cost savings can be realized with a continuous blowdown heat recovery system.

The deaerator pressure is used to operate the Boiler Blowdown heat recovery system. The flash tank receives the surface blowdown water. The temperature of the water is decreased to 227oF (5 PSIG) in the boiler blowdown in Alberta and it is discharged into the storage tank. The deaerator receives the flash steam, which is used to heat the boiler feedwater. From 100 to 200 BTU/LBM of blowdown water, this recovers. By moving the water via a heat exchanger and transferring heat to the system makeup water, the system retrieves the remainder of the energy available. In some cases, the investment in this type of system can be repaid in as little as two months.

We recommend using a Boiler Blowdown in Alberta separator for bottom blowdown on all systems. The blowdown separator would also handle intermittent surface blowdown. A separator is less expensive and takes up less room than a blowdown tank. When applicable codes require it, use a blowdown tank if the client requests it. If continuous surface blowdown is necessary, consider a constant blowdown heat recovery system with a separator for the bottom blowdown if the payback warrants it.
